Gareth Hughes | Director, Waypoint Business Services
With over 25 years of experience in workplace health and safety (WHS), risk management, and executive leadership, Gareth has worked across industries including construction, mining, manufacturing, education, and critical infrastructure.
Gareth holds a Master’s in Work Health and Safety from the University of Newcastle and has led high-level safety, security, and leadership programs across Australia and internationally. His expertise spans ISO 45001-certified safety systems, integrated management systems, workplace culture transformation, strategic change management, and leadership development.
Before founding Waypoint, Gareth held executive leadership roles, including Executive Director of Safety, Security, and Wellbeing at Charles Sturt University and General Manager of Safety, Security, Risk, and Facilities at WesTrac CAT. He also brings a strong background in crisis management, incident investigations, and compliance audits, ensuring organizations meet the highest industry standards while fostering a proactive safety culture.
A former member of both the Australian and British Armed Forces, Gareth’s leadership approach is built on strategic thinking, accountability, and resilience. He has served as a United Nations Peacekeeper and remains dedicated to mentoring leaders at all levels, helping organizations embed lasting change and sustainable success.
Gareth is an active contributor to industry excellence, serving as a judge for national safety awards and as a non-executive director for HunterNet Career Connections, supporting workforce development in the Hunter Valley region.
